In the late 1990s, an Ohio man named Brian Bethel recounted a strange experience he had one evening while staying in a remote rural area. According to Bethel's telling of the events, it was around midnight when he heard a knock at the front door of the home. Assuming it was a neighbor in need of assistance, he opened the door to find two children standing on the porch - a boy and a girl both appearing to be around 10 years old. 

Yet something seemed off about the children from the start. Their faces were completely devoid of emotion and their eyes appeared as empty black orbs reflecting no light. When Bethel inquired if the children needed help, they responded in monotone voices asking to come inside, stating that their parents had abandoned them and they needed a phone to call for a ride. Something about their demeanor made Bethel uneasy, however, and despite their persistent pleading, he refused to let them in and instead suggested they wait outside while he called the local authorities. 

At that point, the children became agitated and hostile, demanding to be let inside and repeating the request with growing intensity. Unnerved by their strange behavior, Bethel hastily shut and locked the door. He then witnessed through a window as the children walked back out to the road and disappeared into the night as quickly as they had come. 

In the years since Bethel has stood by his story. While some dismiss it as an urban legend, he maintains that his encounter was very real. The unnatural and ominous nature of the black-eyed children has led many paranormal researchers to speculate they may be something other than human. Whether fact or fiction, tales like Bethel's continue to spread online and keep the idea of the black-eyed children alive as one of the creepier phenomena in the realm of the unexplained. Their true nature, if they exist at all, remains as mysterious as their dark eyes.
