"Warning of the dangers posed by illegal immigration along the southern border has long been a focal point of Donald Trump's political agenda, dating back to the inception of his most memorable presidential campaign. From the outset, he alleged that Mexico was sending 'invaders' and individuals involved in 'drugs' and 'crime.' However, recently, the former president has highlighted another concern regarding immigrants: languages.

Republican presidential candidate and former President Donald Trump speaks during a Get Out the Vote Rally in Richmond, Va., on Saturday.

"We have languages entering our country. There isn't a single teacher in our entire nation who can speak that language," Trump proclaimed before thousands of supporters at the Conservative Political Action Conference outside Washington, D.C. last month. "These are languages — it's the most absurd thing — they have languages that nobody in this country has ever heard of. It's a very concerning issue," he added. Trump reiterated this statement the following week during an appearance at the southern border alongside Texas Governor Greg Abbott, stating that migrants are entering the country speaking 'truly unknown languages.' 'Nobody speaks them,' he remarked after touring the border in Bird Pass. Additionally, addressing an audience in Virginia Saturday night, Trump described New York classrooms as inundated with 'students from foreign countries, from nations where they barely understand the language.' 'We have nobody who even teaches it. These are languages that nobody was aware of,' he claimed.

It's not entirely clear what languages Trump is referring to. When asked to clarify Trump's remarks, campaign spokesperson Steven Cheung responded, 'Immigrants are infiltrating from countries that we have little knowledge about, which is the point.' He did not respond to a follow-up question regarding which countries these are. The US does not have an official language.

At campaign rallies, Trump frequently pledges to execute the largest domestic deportation operation in history if reelected. He also vows to reinstate his controversial Muslim travel ban and broaden it to include refugees from Gaza, implementing 'ideological screenings' for all immigrants. Trump has also repeatedly claimed that immigrants are diluting the essence of America, a statement likened by President Joe Biden's campaign to the rhetoric of Adolf Hitler."
